About Our Starter Colonies
Each spring, Diggin’ Livin’ produces a limited number of surplus starter colonies using a natural, in-hive queen-rearing process. Rather than grafting, our bees select a new queen from sister eggs, supporting the colony’s natural structure and allowing the bees to raise the queen best suited to lead them. Each starter colony includes 8 Western Shallow frames filled with bees, brood, and stores: 7 drawn frames and 1 frame with foundation. These colonies take time and care to develop, and we complete multiple inspections to ensure a healthy colony and vigorous queen before pickup.
