About Our Single Hive Body

Our eight-frame Western Shallow hive bodies, also known as mediums, are built from durable 7/8″ thick wood from the Cypress family, offering added strength, insulation, and long-lasting protection for the colony. Each box comes standard with exterior cleats, stainless steel screws, rabbeted box joints, and a natural hot-dipped sealant for increased durability in the field.
These hive bodies measure 6 3/4″ deep, which is 1/8″ deeper than the industry standard. The frame rests are also 3/4″ deep, creating a slightly larger space between the top bars and the lid, or the bottom bars of the box above. This added space makes it easier to place emergency feed or Varroa treatments above the frames. Bees may naturally adjust this space with burr comb, which can encourage drone comb production on the top bars and support drone comb removal or Varroa mite monitoring.
All Diggin’ Livin’ hive bodies include vertical dado cuts on the short sides of the box. These allow for the use of a division board or follower board, creating extra insulation, added working space during inspections, or the option to convert the hive body into two side-by-side 4-frame nucleus colonies when paired with our two-way bottom board.
The interior walls are left unfinished and rough sawn to create a more natural environment for the bees and encourage propolis application, which is thought to support a healthier hive interior. While the thicker 7/8″ boards make the exterior dimensions slightly larger, the internal dimensions remain compatible with standard eight-frame equipment.
