What Is an Oxymel?
An oxymel is a traditional herbal preparation made with honey and vinegar. The word comes from the Latin oxymeli, meaning “acid and honey.” This time-honored method combines the sweetness of honey with the acidity of apple cider vinegar to create a flavorful way to extract and carry plant properties. Honey and apple cider vinegar are both valued as herbal solvents and natural preservatives. In our oxymels, herbs are infused into a gently warmed menstruum of honey and apple cider vinegar, then steeped for 6 to 9 weeks with regular shaking and stirring. The herbs are then pressed, and the finished extracts are blended into our individual formulas.
